Tour #14

Half-day excursion (afternoon)

Windsor Castle - Founded by William the Conqueror, Windsor Castle has been changed and added to over the last 900 years. See the restored State Apartments*. Here we see an excellent example of gothic perpendicular architecture complemented by the fine vaulted ceiling of the Chapel of St. George.** It is here that we see the tombs of King Henry VIII and Charles I.

Runnymede and Hampton Court - En route to Hampton Court we drive past Runnymede where King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215. We see the John F Kennedy Memorial which stands on American soil given to the USA by Queen Elizabeth II in 1964.

Our tour ends with afternoon tea at Hampton Court Palace, where we visit the 17th century gardens famous for its very fine vine planted in 1768 (probably the oldest in the world and its maze (the oldest hedge planted maze in Britain, dating from 1690).
