Lisbon
Lisbon, the millenarian city of
the seven hills, with unique views from the top of them, like in
Edward VII park. Cross the famous Marquis of Pombal square and
go down the hill by the XVIII century boulevard of Liberty
avenue to Restauradores square and Rossio, the heart of Lisbon,
which has been the shopping district for more than 2000 years.
The majestic Commerce square, in front of the extraordinary
estuary of Tagus river and close by the nucleus of ancient
Lisbon. Drive through the old quarter of Alfama: the XVI century
"pointed stones" palace, saint Anthony of Padua church, the very
antique XII century Cathedral of Lisbon, saint Vincent Monastery
and saint Engracia church.
Go up the hill of Bairro Alto, the famous section of Fado
singers, where another belvedere waits you; Estrela basilica -
marvelous marble construction with an outstanding dome; the
Parliament of Portugal - imposing XIX century palace. Then, we
go along the riverside by the busy harbor, with its discos and
restaurants, cruise ship docks. On the way to Belem quarter,
drive by the official residence of the President and stops at
Belem Tower – jewel in Manueline style dating from the XVI
century (stop for drinks and toilettes), the Monument to the
Discoveries – homage to the great Portuguese navigators,
Jeronimos Monastery – the most imposing monument of Lisbon,
telling about the apogee of Lisbon’s history, the age of
adventurers and navigators of the XVI century. Free taste of
Port wine. On the way back we go by the elegant ambassadors
residential area, Monsanto park, the XVIII century aqueduct,
Spain square, the bullfight ring - oriental style construction
from the XIX century, Republic avenue - the widest and longest
with XIX century palaces and modern Lisbon.

Sintra, Roca Cape, Cascais, Estoril
Estoril coast - the "sunny coast"
where the sun shines 300 days per year. Drive close by the
largest beach of Carcavelos and the rocky stretch of Sao Joao
and Sao Pedro of Estoril with aristocratic palaces, manor houses
and deluxe villas. Cosmopolitan Estoril with a stop at the
biggest casino in Europe, its gardens and esplanades. Cascais
bay and ancient fishing port, stop of many navigators in the
past, like Columbus and Vasco da Gama. See the typical fishing
boats unloading the catch and a panorama of the coastline.
Continue by the seaside with rocky and sandy beaches and the
picturesque cliff - the Mouth of Hell. Guincho, the wind surfer
beach and Cabo da Roca - the westernmost point of continental
Europe - view of the ocean and seashore at 140 meters high.
Drive across the luxuriant Sintra Mountain and its gardens by
twisted roads surrounded by a huge variety of vegetation - "The
Glorious Eden", "The Garden of Paradise". Admire the noble
houses - each one in a different style, matching the variety and
originality of the vegetation. Stop in the medieval Sintra town,
with free time to see the most ancient royal palace in Portugal,
the narrow streets with local handicraft shops, the typical
local pastry like queijadas and travesseiros, the wine shops,
the gardens.

Obidos,
Alcobaca, Nazare, Batalha, Fatima

Travel northwards and arrive at
the beautiful and very ancient walled town called Obidos -
medieval city surrounded by the castle with picturesque narrow
streets, whitewashed houses, iron balconies, flower pots in
every window. Inhabited by Romans and Arabs, this was the
dwelling place of the Portuguese court for more than 500 years.
Drive to Alcobaca and stop in this charming ancient town. Free
time to visit the XII century Alcobaca Monastery. It has the
longest church in Portugal, an amazing construction which
resisted time and earthquakes and where you can see how
Cistercian monks used to live. See also the tombs of king Peter
and Ines, the 2 lovers of the most dramatic Portuguese love
story. The cloisters are worthwhile a stopover: wander around
the garden, kitchen, cellar, refectory, chapter house,
dormitory, Kings’ hall of this centenary dwelling place of
friars.
Free time for lunch in Nazare, the most colorful of Portuguese
fishing villages and the richest fishing region of Portugal,
where one can see fishermen and their wives wearing traditional
clothes. This seaside resort is also famous for its beautiful
handicraft. After lunch, go up to the cliff near the beach, for
a superb view of the village and coastline.
Proceed to Batalha Monastery, a XIV century masterpiece in
Gothic style. Here you can admire the highest church in
Portugal, the Royal Pantheon of the Portuguese “Conquerors of
the Sea” – the so-called “Magnificent generation”, the beautiful
manueline cloister, the chapter house with the tomb of the
Unknown Soldier and the Unfinished Chapels.
Finally Fatima - the Center of Christian faith and a local of
world's pilgrimage. See the chapel where Our Lady appeared to
the shepherds, the Basilica and the vast square where people
crawl on their knees towards the heart of the shrine, in a
impressive sign of faith and devotion, lightning a candle,
praying and making a vow to Our Lady or fulfilling a promise.
Religious services can be attended. Visit also Aljustrel with
the humble houses where the shepherds lived.

Proceed to Fatima where you can visit the Sanctuary and the
Basilica (with the tombstones of the shepherds) and the Chapel
of Apparitions - heart of the shrine, where Our Lady appeared to
Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco. In the Chapel of the Apparitions,
in the Basilica or in the new church you can attend mass and
confess. Near the Chapel of the Apparitions, you can light a
candle and make a vow to Our Lady. Leading to the Chapel, a
marble passage is crossed by pilgrims on their knees to ask
spiritual heal or fulfill a promise. In front of the Chapel
there is a water source.
Aljustrel - visit the humble houses where the 3 shepherds,
Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco were born and lived. In the
Ethnographic Regional Centre, next to Lucía's house, are a lot
of articles like letters of Lucia, furniture of the shepherds
houses, pictures connected with the miracles, clothes, etc.
Valinhos - see the place where Our Lady of Fatima appeared for
the 4th time in August 19th, 1917.
