TOUR # 1 -
Ston and Trsteno
Take
the coastal road towards the north-west and in only 15 minutes,
find yourself in the village of Trsteno. The village takes its
name from the Croatian word for «reeds», but reeds are not the
only things that grow in Trsteno, as you will discover while you
wander through the gardens that patrician families of the old
Dubrovnik built to complement their summer homes in the 15th and
16th centuries. The most extravagant is the one Ivan Gucetic
built in 1502 and which his descendants embellished over the
centuries. The original house is in a transitional
Gothic-Renaissance style, and in the surrounding park there are
palm trees and sweet smelling camphor which provide a lush
backdrop for decorative stone columns, a baroque fountain
featuring none other than Neptune and his nymphs, and assorted
stone statues. Continue along the same coastal road to the
Peninsula of Peljesac known for its excellent wine production
(Postup and Dingac are highly recommendable red wines) and
oyster and mussel farms. Have lunch (included) in the famous
little town of Mali Ston, next to the town of Ston. Built in the
14th century by citizens of Dubrovnik, salt basins were formed
in the bay of Ston and needed to be protected at the time. Salt
basins are still in use today so you have the opportunity to see
how salt is being «stolen» from the Adriatic sea. Also, enjoy a
boat ride (weather permitting) in the bay of Mali Ston, and sail
trough the oyster and mussel beds and taste some fresh seafood
that you have picked yourself.

TOUR # 2
-
Dubrovnik and Konavle Region
The
tour begins with a drive south of the city to one of the highest
viewing points to enjoy the panoramic view of Dubrovnik and the
entire Riviera. Then drive back to Pile Gate on the west side of
the city. This is where the walking tour begins; across the
bridge guarded by a statue of Saint Blaise, through Pile Gate
and down the city's main artery, known as Stradun or Placa.
Along the way, visit the 14th century Franciscan Monastery whose
cloister ranks among the most inspiring sites of the city and
houses third oldest pharmacy in Europe, dating form the early
14th century. Facing the Monastery is the famous Onofrio's
fountain with its bas-relief by 15th century Italian master,
Onofrio de la Cava. Walk past the Sponza Palace, notable for its
columned courtyard with elaborate stone carvings, and the church
of Saint Blaise, the patron saint of Dubrovnik. Visit the
impressive Rector's Palace dating back to the 15th century, from
where the elected Governor or Rector administered the Republic
of Dubrovnik until Napoleon's seizure of the city in 1808. Also
visit the Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady which was
built in the 18th century at the very place of the former
Cathedral. The old Cathedral was built from 12-14th centuries in
the Romanesque style and was destroyed in the earthquake in
1667. The Cathedral's rich Treasury of gold and silver religious
artifacts is one of the most famous in the entire Adriatic
region. After the walking tour, walk to Pile Gate down the main
street of Stradun and depart for the Konavoski Dvori restaurant,
one of the foremost restaurants on the entire Dalmatian coast.
The restaurant is perfectly situated in an old water mill next
to the cascading waters of Ljuta river. Receive a traditional
welcome of local brandy and dried figs at the 200-year old mill
which still functions and where you can grain some flour
yourself. Lunch starts by a repast of traditional delicacies,
including Dalmatian ham and cheese, roast lamb and veal cooked
under the iron bell covered with hot coals. After lunch, drive
to the seaside resort of Cavtat, scenic drive past the
picturesque villages of Popovici and Radovcici. Known as
Epidaurus in ancient Greek (228 BC) and Roman times, this was
the settlement from where the denizens fled from the invading
Avars and Slavs in the 7th century to found what is now called
Dubrovnik. This charming seaside resort has long been a favorite
for sailors and yachting enthusiasts. Edward VII and Wallis
Simpson traveled here during their honeymoon. We have time to
leisurely walk by the sea, or have cappuccino, tea or something
else (on your own) at one of the outdoor cafés overlooking the
sea or to take a walk up the hill (optional) to the Racic
Mausoleum to view the famous sculptures of the world renown
Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. This is a strenuous 10 min.
walk to the hilltop involving stairs, but well worth the
fabulous view of the neighboring islands. Stop at the village of
Molunat for a breathtaking view of the peninsula and the sea.
After transfer back to the ship. The romantic charm, traditional
cuisine and historic locale will make your entire visit a
memorable and highly enjoyable excursion.
