TOUR # 1 -
Athens & Sounio
Take a short drive to Athens, the cradle of the European
civilization. For twenty-five centuries, the panorama of this
city is dominated by the rock of the Acropolis. Walk uphill to
visit the Acropolis and see the principal buildings: the
Propylaia, where you will visit the Museum of the Acropolis,
the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and the magnificent
Parthenon. During your visit, you will also have some free time.
Continue on with a panoramic tour of the city, where you will
view the Olympieion (the Temple of Olympian Zeus) from the 6th
Century BC, one of the largest Corynthian style temples in
Greek, history and Hadrian’s Arch (2nd Century AD).
This divided the Greek city from Hadrian’s new Roman city.
Arriving at Syntagma Square, see the Royal Palace, built for
Otto I of Bavaria and the present day Parliament. In front of
the Palace stands the Monument of the Unknown Soldier where two
soldiers (Evzoni) stand guard continuously .Drive further along
and pass the neoclassical buildings of the University, Academy
and Library before arriving at the Stadium laid out under
Lycurgus in the 4th Century BC and rebuilt in 1896 on
its original plan for the modern Olympic Games.
Drive via Syngrou Avenue, following the road you will enter
Poseidon avenue and cross the aristocratic district of Glyfada.
There you will have the opportunity to taste a delicious lunch ,
in a sea side restaurant of the area. After lunch follow again
the road next to the sea, you will have a view for about one
hour until arriving to Sounion. There will be enough time for a
guided tour and beautiful pictures to be taken. Along the
enchanting Attic coastline with its jagged inlets, we reach Cape
Sounion, at the tip of which the most famous monument in Greece
after the Parthenon: the Temple of Poseidon. Besides the remains
of the walls fortified in 409 BC for the Peloponnesian War and
of the small Propylaia leading into the sanctuary, there still
stand the 16 tall, graceful columns of the temple. Built in
444-440 BC by the same architect responsible for The Temple of
Hephaistos of the Athenian Agora and the temple of Nemesis at
Ramnous, it had 6 columns on the ends and 13 on the sides, each
with 16 grooves instead of the usual 20 to provide better
resistance to erosion by the sea elements, and a frieze
sculptured on the architrave showing exploits of Thesus, the
Gigantomachy, and Centaurs and Lapiths in battle. On the facing
hill, the remains of the Sanctuary of Athena Sounio. After your
visit free time will be offered for refreshment at the cafeteria
of the site or for taking some pictures of the magnificent view
to the Aegean sea having as back round the temple of Poseidon,
symbol of southern Attica. You will then take the seaside road
back to the port of Piraeus.

TOUR # 2
-
Ancient Corinth-Argolis-Nafplion
Depart from Piraeus and drive trough –Skisto –Skaramaga. You
will take the panoramic road from the “Kakia skala” that has a
beautiful view of the blue shining sea. You will make a stop at
the Corinth Canal in order to take pictures. Continuing this
wonderful excursion, you will visit Ancient Corinth. View the
impressive Acrocorinth fortifications from a distance. Leave
your coach for a guided walking tour of the ruins, which are
mainly Roman. The Doric temple of Apollo stands on a knoll to
the north of the Agora. Visit the Archaeological museum; admire
the mosaic floors, Mycenaean and Corinthian pottery, statues of
two supernatural beings and many other interesting objects.
Next, take the highway again and drive to Mycenae. Arriving in
Argolis, drive through the beautiful orange and lemon groves. On
arrival, walk up the ramp of ancient Mycenae and through the
Lion’s Gate, enter in to Mycenae’s magical acropolis! – Today in
ruins. Everything here reminds us of Homer’s Iliad as you see
the Grave Circle, in which the famous golden as you marvel at
the Cyclopean Walls, the foundations of the Palace, where once
Agamemnon lived, the Postern Gate, the entrance to the
Underground Cistern and the famous vaulted tomb.
Afterwards, enjoy a typical Greek lunch, accompanied with local
red & white wine form the famous groves of “Tegea”, in a
traditional restaurant located in the modern village of Mycenae.
After lunch, drive to Epidaurus. Walk through the beautiful
groves to arrive at the famous Theatre, one of the best
preserved monuments of antiquity in the world. The Theatre is
outstanding in its perfection and is able to house 14,000
people. Continue on and follow your guide to the local museum
where you will view its unique exhibits.
After visiting Epidaurus, drive to sea side Nafplio, the first
capital of modern Greece. There, you will have free time on your
own in the town of Nafplion .
Return to the bus and drive back to Piraeus and your ship.

Argolis-Nafplion
|
